rota sludge drilling
In 2001 these methods were further tested in Nicaragua. Here, a rotary movement was added, resulting in the Rota- sludge method. The Rota-sludge and the Stonehammer methods together form a package. Basically one drills with the **Rota Sludge** until one hits a layer with boulders or stones, then one uses the Stone-hammer to pass through this layer and finally one switches back to Rota Sludge when the boulders are passed.
General description of the **Rota-sludge drilling**
A steel pipe with a cutting bit is repeatedly lifted and dropped on the bottom of the well to be made. The well is kept full of water,
mixed with cow dung. On the down stroke, the impact on the ground loosens the soil and on the up stroke, the top of the pipe is closed by hand, drawing up the water through the pipe and transporting the cuttings to the surface. On the next down stroke, the hand opens the top of the pipe and the water squirts into a pit, in front of the well. In this pit, the cuttings separate from the water and settle down, while the water overflows from the pit back into the well. In this way there is a continuous drilling and removal of cuttings. As the drilling progresses, more pipes are added.

**La perforación (o lanzamiento) con agua rotatoria o rotatoria manual (rota sludge en inglés) (profundidad máxima : unos 40 m).**
Esta técnica es una de las más utilizadas. Es una evolución de la técnica del lanzamiento directo.Permite realizar perforaciones más profundas, pero solo puede utilizarse en terrenos sedimentarios. Sin embargo, conviene resaltar que otra técnica de tipo « rotatorio », denominada « rotary drilling » (ver más adelante, en el punto 5.2.b), que utiliza un principio similar pero está mecanizada (emplea un compresor o un pequeño motor montado sobre un bastidor), permite alcanzar profundidades mayores y trabajar en terrenos duros.
Se basa también en la circulación y la presión del agua, así como en el uso de una herramienta perforante pesada, que en este caso se hace girar. El agua se inyecta en el interior de la barra de perforación, y el lodo (agua con desechos) asciende por las paredes de la perforación.
Para obtener una presión de agua suficiente, se utiliza preferentemente una motobomba. Se puede dejar el extremo inferior del tubo de perforación simplemente abierto, o añadirle una herramienta de perforación (barrena), que suele ser lo más frecuente. La abrasión del suelo se lleva a cabo con una herramienta tridentada o un tricono que se hace rotar manualmente desde la superficie, utilizando para ello una barra de perforación.
Los residuos generados, o « cuttings », se llevan hasta la superficie a través de la circulación de los lodos de perforación. Estos se introducen en el interior de las barras, salen por la herramienta de perforación, ascienden hasta la superficie por el espacio anular que hay entre las paredes de la perforacióny la barra de perforación, se decantan en pequeñas cavidades excavadas junto a la perforación, y se bombean e inyectan de nuevo.
Para evitar el hundimiento de las paredes y la pérdida no controlada de agua por filtración, se puede mezclar con el agua un fluido de perforación (aditivo). La técnica del lanzamiento de agua (con rotación) puede utilizarse a una profundidad de hasta 35-45 metros.

Description: The rota sludge technique is similar to hand sludging and the Pounder rig. It involves raising and lowering a steel pipe, which is weighted at the bottom and fixed with a drill bit on the base to drill the hole (Fig 19). A simple wooden frame and lever are used to enable the reciprocating action (Figure 17). Water mixed with cow dung is used as drilling mud – ie to carry the cuttings to the surface and prevent collapse of the drilled hole. A hand, placed at the top of the pipe acts as a valve, lifting up and releasing the cuttings on
the down stroke and covering the pipe on the up stroke. A pit (Figure 18) enables the drill cuttings to settle out and thus the mud to be recycled. A handle is clamped to the drill pipe. This allows rotation of the drill pipe, which assists to scrape and break the formation.
