Two important precedents overshadow the authority and obligations to lease the rights to gas resources that are collocated with coal resources. The first was the landmark case, AMOCO Production Company v. Southern Ute Tribe 526 U.S. 865, 875 (1999), in which the US Supreme court ruled that coal leases that were issued under the Coal Lands Acts of 1909 and 1910 do not convey the right to capture and use of natural gas.
