Spanish term

Promoción y Prevención de la Salud (Mexican ministry)

Spanish to English Social Sciences Government / Politics English name of ministry
Hi, all! I'm translating an article about (what else?) the effect of COVID-19 on the economy in Mexico and am not sure how to translate the role of Hugo López-Gatel Ramírez, the Deputy Minister of the above.

My first thought is "Ministry of Health Promotion and Prevention", but that sounds awkward to me.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Muriel Vasconcellos Mar 30, 2020:
Common problem This situation comes up a lot in my work for WHO and its Regional Office in the Americas. Chema's answer corresponds to the solution that we use. For Mexico, however, we would say 'under secretary' or 'undersecretary'. When ministers of health meet at the international level, the rep for Mexico is sometimes referred to as 'Minister'; otherwise, 'Secretary' and "Undersecretary'.

neutral philgoddard : It's not clear whether Sarah wants the job title or the name of the department, but there is no ministry of this name. It's a secretariat or department of the health ministry.

deputy minister if disease prevention and health promotion

López-Gatell has become the de facto health minister in Mexico -as far as public exposure goes related to Covid updates- but he is actually not; he is the subsecretario de prevención y promoción de la salud (deputy minister of disease prevention and health promotion).

Thank you, very helpful!

agree philgoddard : I think you're confusing things slightly by translating "subsecretario" as "deputy minister", though that's what he effectively is. And I agree that it should be "for", not "of" - he is not the deputy head of a ministry.

Thanks phil. And yes, I agree that "deputy minister" might be confusing in English but I see no better way to say it. Thanks!

Undersecretary of Health Prevention and Promotion

This seems to be the way several sources have recorded it in recent months when writing about the COVID virus, or just 'Undersecretary of Health' (https://americanpriority.com/news/mexico-confirms-first-case...
Peer comment(s):

disagree philgoddard : As Sarah points out, you can't say "health prevention".

disagree AllegroTrans : "health prevention" would mean "encouraging illness"

Spanish term (edited): subsecretario de Prevención y Promoción de la Salud

deputy secretary/undersecretary for public health

I agree with Chema's translation, but I'm offering this as a more concise shorthand, since this is a news article rather than an official document and you might not want to spell out his long-winded job title.

"Disease prevention and health promotion" is public health.
