: 'Class of debt' is better here. I found this difference on the website Adrian referenced. Looked into the general Eng usage, and this is used more widely. 'class' works in this context, while 'tier' works for individual companies.

: Yes, both are fine but "Class of debt" is preferred these days, just like "people of colour" or "burgers of cheese", not to mention the "People's Front of Judaea" as opposed to the "Judean People's Front".

It's the sort of joke where you have to be in front of the person you are telling it to so use your imagination
When they say that they don't know, you wipe some imaginary door handle, look at it with an expression of dissatisfaction, (pretend to) spit on it, and then wipe it again.
Bottom line: I think "debt class" (or class of debt) are good answers.
