Spanish term

Fiscalía única

Spanish to English Law/Patents Law: Contract(s)
This is a document from Mexico. It contains the name of a prosecutor followed by...

"Agente del Ministerio Público adscrito a la Fiscalía única del Ministerio Público de..."

I don't understand what "única" refers to in this context.

Discussion

Robert Carter Sep 24, 2019:
I don't have time to look at this right now, but I have to say I think something is missing here in the Spanish. There aren't a lot of instances in Mexico where this particular title appears without a subsequent qualifier, i.e., the "fiscalía única de mujeres", or "fiscalía única estatal". I'm wondering if it means something like "nationwide" or "statewide"?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I agree that this is the best answer. The reason I asked is because we don’t use “sole” when referring to the office of a prosecutor. "

Spanish term (edited): Fiscalía única... de la MP de .... ABC

One-and-only district-numbered Prosecution Service of the Office of Prosecutor General of .... ABC

If the district of ABC is a small one, then it might be covered by a single-numbered DA Office, rather than a Fiscalía primera, segunda, tercera etc. *District* Attorney's Office and, by notarial, DPP and judiical convention in most Lat. Am. countries, numbered outwards from the town or city centre /center.

Our Mexican colleagues or other ones in Mexico to confirm.

PS otherwise makes sense to me wearing my sombrero, rather than City of London bowler.

I would say "única" refers to "sole", e.g. sole Prosecutor's Office.

sole

1. one and only.
"my sole aim was to contribute to the national team"
single, solitary, lone, unique, individual, exclusive, singular

neutral AllegroTrans : Whilst this is not "wrong" per se, I don't think anyone would understand what a "sole proesecutor" is and a clearer translation would be desirable

Thanks. But as Robert mentioned, the phrase may be incomplete ... and given what we have, it is the only thing I can think of!
