“CD’ing” into a directory is basically navigating to a directory using the command prompt (if you’re using windows) or the terminal (if you’re using the linux).

yes and it was introduced only after someone discovered that you could organise data in a hierarchical directory tree structure, instead of lumping all files (on the same tape or some other "advanced" for the time storage medium) together.

agree Daryo : I remember the time before DOS, room sized computers with ferrite core memory boards and 10 kg removable discs and banks of magnetic tapes as external memory ... including rows of lights indicating binary values of each registers.
