Glossary entry (derived from question below)
English term or phrase:
absorption band or shoulder
Portuguese translation:
banda de absorção ou ombro
English term
absorption band or shoulder
"In the range 600 cm-1 to 650 cm-1 using scale expansion, any absorption band or shoulder may indicate the presence of serpentines."
My question is about "shoulder". What does it mean in portuguese?
Here is what I found:
I have seen the word "shoulder" used for "thresholds". The words have slightly different meanings, but often refer to the same type of features. A shoulder is usually a change in the derivative of a spectral function without a change in sign. A threshold usually refers to an sudden increase in the value of a function without a concomitant drop.

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.
How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:
An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)
A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).
Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.
When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.
* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Although I haven't been able to validate "acostamento" for this particular context, I think it makes sense. There are plenty of references to "faixa de absorção" on-line: https://www.google.com/search?ei=UTVYXZ7kN6L59AOd8YvgBQ&q=&q...
My guess is that this terminology is rooted in traffic. You have "faixas" and "acostamento" along a freeway. "Shoulder" in the English word for "acostamento" in American English: https://dictionary.reverso.net/portuguese-english/acostament...
I'm giving it a low confidence rating, because this is just a guess.

Discussion
https://www.proz.com/translation-articles/articles/95/
