Always a little tough with just your term alone. But your context says you're excavating. If they said you were walking down the 'bergschakt' or installing things in it then it could be a shaft ... but it would also be a tunnel!!

: "Excavation" or even "blasting" may fit the context more easily at times.

Thanks Michael! But blasting is only part of the process, when it is being used. Excavation (schaktning) includes moving the blasted stuff out!
