Spanish term

gobernar a la mar

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Ships, Sailing, Maritime
Hi all,

Spanish Spanish to UK English.

Instructions for the captain during bad weather, las rondas are rounds to check that everything is lashed down correctly and not taking on water. I guess "gobernar a la mar" means something like "steer into the storm/waves"?

"Durante la celebración de estas rondas, de ser necesario, ***gobernará a la mar*** evitando poner en riesgo a las personas que la realicen."

Thanks in advance.

steer into the waves

"The ship must keep its bow (the front end) pointing into the waves to plow through them safely, since a massive wave striking the ship's side could roll the vessel over and sink it."

agree MPGS : :-) [Apparently the opposite tactic also works: "Run before the storm with the stern toward the waves" https://www.northsails.com/sailing/en/2016/09/how-to-sail-sa...]

handle the waves

This is about a sailing race. The 'tondas' are laps, not the security rounds that would be found on a large ship.

'Handling' is a series of maneuvers undertaken when entering a wave.

Sailing races are almost always around a small island, or a set of buoys (markers), so waves will be encountered at some point in every lap.

A sailing craft can not sail directly into the waves as the direction of the wind and waves is the same. It has to sail at an angle (tacking) and when approaching the top of the wave it has to be maneuvered so that is slides at an angle to pick up speed for the next wave and to prevent the bow from coming down through air to slam the water.

neutral philgoddard : How do you work out that it's a race, and rondas means laps? Neil says they're tours of inspection, and I have no reason to disbelieve him.
