Je traduis un article assez technique sur les vélos.
Jusqu'ici pas de soucis, mais je viens de tomber sur le terme "even jumps" qui me laisse perplexe.
Voici le contexte :

-- delivers tight ratios = the difference from one speed to the next one is not so big so when you shift to the next gear you don't feel suddenly a big difference in the effort needed to keep the bike moving.
-- with even jumps = the increase in the ratio between the speed of pedalling and the speed of the back wheel is roughly the same between gears, say every time you shift a gear up, you go around 5% faster, instead of say 10% faster between 1st and 2nd gear and then only 6% faster between the 2nd and 3rd gear [which would make "jumps" between speeds irregular/uneven]- it's about "jumps" in speed of the bike for the same speed of pedalling - and they are "even" - roughly the same on a logarithmic scale i.e. every "jump" is in the same proportion (each time 4% or 5% or 6% faster)

there are some similarities with a gearbox of a car or truck - a well designed gearbox will have similar "jumps" from one speed to the next one.

: I think that is what is meant by the 'tight ratios' — closely-spaced ratios; but I think the 'jumps' refers to the physical diameter of the actual sprockets themselves = smoother gear-changing: "a smooth rhythm while pedalling and shifting "

that kind of "even jumps" certainly make the ride more pleasant, but "evenly spaced speeds" are far more important for keeping a smooth ride // if you look at the picture it does look like there is constant proportion from one speed to the next.

Nous parlons souvent de passage de vitesse doux en mécanique. Ceci s'applique aussi au vélo.

Je ne comprends pas pourquoi ils suggèrent que la cassette (groupe de pignons) pourrait garantir l'uniformité des changements, puisque c'est le changeur de vitesse qui règle cela. Sauf s'ils veulent dire qu'il n'y a pas de gros écarts entre la taille des pignons (et donc la chaîne peut glisser vers le pignon voisin sans trop d'effort).
Je n'aurais pas choisi "saut" parce qu'une chaîne peut "sauter" lorsque elle n'est pas bien appariée avec les plateaux (au niveau des pédales).
Le "broader range" signifie que le cycliste change, par exemple, du pignon 3 à 7 d'un seul coup, ce qui peut engendrer des bruits, frottements et même blocages parce que tu as une chaîne qui doit effectuer un mouvement latéral trop brusque.
J'imagine que "changements fluides / bien réglés" serait à peu près le sens voulu.
