: Don't think this is quite precise enough. "wouldn't be around" could simply mean that they would go somewhere else (geographically), while the Russian quite clearly means that they would die soon.

You have a point. I'll stick with the other option then:"they knew that there wasn't much time left.."

: "short space of time" for what? Once more: the Russian clearly means that their life will be over soon, so that must be addressed equally clearly in English. / но в этом контексте формулировка на русском (мне кажется) - ясна, а твой вариант не совсем.

с таким же успехом, или не очень, короткий век для чего?

Перевод
The eldest ones were lenient with me (treated well, warm and like a brother - maybe, they behave so, because I am the youngest, perhaps they had feeling as if they were destined to live or have short life)

Discussion
Отвести-б) Определить, предназначить кому-, чему-л. Comprehensive Russian Explanatory Dictionary © S.A. Kuznetsov, 2010
предназначать судьбой - to (pre)destine (for)
"предназначен судьбой"-без упоминания "судьба" здесь было бы не очень правильным. Они заранее чувствовали что их судьба такая. they were (pre)destined for it...
There are so many cases in the "questions" forums where people shoot out the first possible answer that comes to their mind insanely quickly to make sure they're the first and thus pocket the Points...
Especially in the segment of literature and arts, there is rarely one or maybe two "correct" answer/s, it's a matter of offering suggestions which the asker and peers can then digest and think about and then maybe come up with an even better variety.
And of course if you really don't like what I suggest in the "discussion" section, you can always put me down there... ;)
If Andrew happens to like one or several of them, he can tell me so and then I can enter them "officially" as an Answer.
Generally I prefer such a procedure to making a big fuss with an Answer right away.
"that their lives would be over soon"
"that they did not have long to live"
"that their lives on Earth would not be long"
"that they only had a short time left to live"
I could think of quite a few more varieties if necessary...
