Which raises an issue that comes up now and then - should the translation smooth out the shortcomings of the original, or should it reflect them? Answers on a postcard - or perhaps a topic for a forum discussion?

Yes, but that's exactly why "drained" works so well as it also has the idea of "rinna ut"

I don't think "förlorar nästan halva mig" is particularly good Swedish either, any more than "lose almost half of myself" is good English. But that is what she customer (whose name is Anna W.) says, and my guess is that it is "förlora blod" - "lose blood" that is behind her choice of words.
