English term

a 3/8\" 1/4\"-20 adapter

English to French Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering

"Includes 3/8" to 1/4"-20 Adapter"

"The stand is topped with a 5/8" mounting stud with 3/8" threads, a 3/8" 1/4"-20 adapter, and weighs just 2.2 lb."

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EHSLO9M

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): GILLES MEUNIER

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Merci beaucoup Tony pour vos explications. Bonne journée à tous.
Tony M Jan 16, 2018:
@ Asker In photography, the 3/8" and 1/4" Whitworth threads are a universal standard and must never be converted! They are used for fixing cameras to tripods, and also for some lighting accessories; whereas the 5/8" diameter is more usually used in the world of lighting.
When non-metric units are used in metric countries which are not converted because they represent a specific standar threadform, as here, the lengths are still given in metric, as a measurable length of no standard significance.

And yes, if you have a figure of 16, it almost certainly also means 16 mm long — very often in FR, for both lengths and sometimes diameters, the mm are taken as read.
Willa95 (asker) Jan 16, 2018:
B D Finch Jan 16, 2018:
Do not convert! These sort of dimensions quoted in fractions of inches should not be converted. A quick trip to any French DIY store will confirm that.

See the description I've just posted as a reference comment. The length is in cm because it needn't be standardised to inches.

Something like this:

"This 3/8"-16 to 1/4"-20 Reducer Bushing from Oben allows you to convert any standard 3/8"-16 thread for the insertion of a standard 1/4"-20 screw. This way you can, for instance, mount a professional-style head with a 3/8"-16 threaded hole on a tripod that has a 1/4"-20 screw. The bushing is a replacement part for Oben ..."
