Spanish term

canto ligado

Spanish to English Art/Literary Music
"Donizetti reserva a Paolina la primera gran aria de la ópera, “Di quai soavi lagrime” que expone una generosa melodía que exige dominio del fraseo y del canto ligado."

This is from the storyline for an opera (Poliuto) to be handed out to the spectators.

legato

In other words, smooth, without separating the notes (as opposed to staccato, with the notes short and separated from each other) or portato, which is in between the two. The Italian term is always used in English and it's nearly always used in Spanish too, but sometimes, as here, the literal Spanish translation "ligado" is found:

"Qué es cantar legato?
Y por qué es importante cantar ligado?
María Callas, gran legato!
Cantar ligado o legato (en italiano) consiste en hacer una emisión sin ningún tipo de discontinuidad en el sonido, independientemente de la nota que se cante. Por poner un ejemplo sería como cuando un violoncello pasa el arco y cambia las notas, el sonido es continuo aunque la altura de las notas varíe."

"Canto" can simply be omitted; it's redundant, because we already know this refers to singing. You can put "legato singing" if you like, but it sounds a bit silly in my opinion. A description in English would simply say legato.

So the phrase could to "mastery of phrasing and legato".

"She still has that lovely "tear in the voice" quality that has always moved me, her French was impeccable and the phrasing and legato were, as usual with this artist, exemplary."

Take three minutes to listen to Maria Callas singing this aria:

agree Sandro Tomasi : Legato (slurred w/ no space bet. notes) is the opposite of staccato (short with space bet. notes). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legato

Thank you, Sandro. That explains it much better :)

Bel canto

Style of singing very much associated with Donizetti.

Yes, as Charles says, it's also legato.

Thanks. This is what I thought it might be at first but I'm convinced by Charles's explanation

legato singing

It is actually not exactly the same thing to do/sing a legato (for example, to sing a long legato line) than to master legato singing, as a style or as an inspirational, culminating refinement.
