German term

Aggregat

German to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Sports cars
This is from a text about the professional development of a motor engineer. He writes:

Auch interessiert mich die Fahrwerktechnik, da diese neben dem Aggregat die Gene eines Sportwagens festlegt und über die Querdynamik zur Faszination dieser Fahrzeugkategorie beiträgt.

I know that an "aggregate" here is some kind of unit composed of separate parts but I donot understand its relationship to the chassis technology or gear technology (?) (Fahrwerktechnik) here. Is the Aggrega a fuel pump unit?

Aggregat Thanks a lot. Powertrain looks great.From my limited understanding of this field, I thought it was going t be something like "drive unit."

Powertrain

Aggregat could be the engine itself, but contrasting it with the chassis, I would imagine he is referring to the powertrain as a whole here.
Peer comment(s):

agree Richard Stephen : AKA drive train

FYI, the drivetrain doesn't typically include the engine so they're not exact synonyms
agree Johannes Gleim : Könnte zutreffen, auch wenn der Quelltext nicht eindeutig ist.

disagree Cesar Morales : I have to disagree, the context does not refer to drive train, it has to do with the "Genes" that define a sports car

It really is quite common for engineers to use Aggregat when referring to the powertrain or engine.

Set

I believe in this context the author refers with "Aggregat" to "the grouping" of something that forms the genes of the sports car. Therefore I´d recommend the use of "Set" as the example phrase below:
Example sentence:

"I am also interested in the chassis engineering, since this adds to the set of genes that define a sports car and contributes..."

Peer comment(s):

disagree Orion Schmidt : It would have to be *der* Gene (genitive) in that case. The author is saying that the Aggregat and the Fahrwerktechnik are the "genes" that define a sports car, which is true of the powertrain and the chassis.
