文脈からして、economies of scale （規模の経済、スケールメリット）の意味で使っていると思います。ただし、訳には「規模の経済」より「大量生産」の方が、次の collection of niche volume, higher-volume products によく繋がると思います。（なお、「大量生産」と言うと、単価が安くなるのは分かります。）
