Dynamic positioning capability analysis
In order to provide vessel owners, operators, and crew with information regarding the ability of a vessel to maintain its position and heading, it is standard practice for a DP capability analysis to be performed.Footnote 32Footnote 33 This process uses static calculations to compare the total environmental load with the available thrust power, including a 20% dynamic reserve. The results of this analysis may be presented in the form of polar plots, each of which are produced for a given thruster configuration and show the theoretical limiting wind speed, from all directions, below which the environmental forces on the vessel can be counteracted by thrust.Footnote 34
The manufacturer of the DP system for the Maersk Detector performed such a DP capability analysis in 2004. The resulting polar plot can be seen in Appendix G, indicating the following notable results

Capability plot jest wykresem (teoretycznym) osiągów jednostki z systemem DP w różnych stanach funkcjonowania. Przy tłumaczeniu (prawdopodobnie mówimy tutaj o opisie stanowiska DPO/SDPO użyłbym angielskiego zwrotu w nawiasie - (capability plot) ).

DP capability defines a DP vessel's station-keeping ability under given environmental and operational conditions. DP capability analyses are used to establish the maximum weather conditions in which a DP vessel can maintain its position and heading for a proposed thruster configuratioin.
To prepare a DP capability curve for a certain vessel wind, current and waves are normally taken to act in the same direction. Environmental forces and moments are increased until they are exactly balance by the maximum available thrust offered by the thruster configuration. By letting the environmental components rotate in steps around the vessel the results of a DP capability analysis can be presented by means of a limiting mean wind speed for a discrete number of wind angles of attack.
