Each Versus Control Design—To achieve the same precision (standard deviation) in comparing each of several test treatments with a single control that would be obtained by comparing only one of those treatments with the control in a single pair design, requires that the experimenter use a sample size equal to the number of test treatments (excluding the control) multiplied by the number of panelists he would use for the single pair study. If the experimenter would like to compare each test product with another (as opposed to testing the test product with the single control) with the same precision as that obtained in a single pair study, then he must use two times the number of test treatments (excluding the control) times the number of panelists he would use in the single pair study
