"Imperatore in ritiro" è solo una delle possibili traduzioni, ma è quella che ho letto più spesso, perciò applicherei la stessa dicitura in questo caso, quindi "shogun in ritiro".
"Shogun abdicatario" è una buona alternativa per evitare ripetizioni.
Mantenne il titolo di shogun fino al 1605, quando, al fine di assicurare ai suoi discendenti la successione alla carica, prese il titolo formale di ogosho, cioè <b>shogun in ritiro</b>, in favore del figlio Hidetada [...]

Scusami per la traslitterazione imprecisa dovuta alla mancanza della "o" con il segno della vocale lunga in "shogun" e nella prima "o" di "ogosho", ma quest'ultimo brano l'ho ricopiato a mano.
