"Erfahrungswerte" is a typical (and very annoying) way of expressing an otherwise basic idea: "experience" or "results"

a lot of ways to do this, so let's see what else comes up

agree BrigitteHilgner : I prefer "scientific facts" to "solid science" (don't ask me, why).

thanks Daniel
agree Mair A-W (PhD) : @BrigitteHilgner maybe it's too close to "material science" ;-)

thanks mairaw
agree philgoddard : You could leave out "gained on the ground", which is largely redundant.

thought I would throw it in but, as you say, is redundant
agree Alexandra Timms (X) : I also agree that "gained on the ground" could be left out.

data gathered in races/competition/practice

Since it deals with material science, I would think that "Erfahrungswerte" refer to performance data that is gathered in races or during practice, depending on the further context.
Example sentence:

to back up data gathered in competition scientifically.

athletic experience

...to undergird athletic experience with scientific research/knowledge/facts

"Background: As education reform continues to unfold in athletic training, it is important for all certified athletic trainers to understand the research that undergirds the educational practices in athletic training."

neutral Lancashireman : athletic (Amer.) = sports/sporting (RoW); undergird (Amer.) = underpin (RoW)

Sporting experience seems a bit broad. To me, athletic experience is more about the grind and skills..

athletes' real-life experiences

A further option could be bringing the athletes in.

The phrase could e.g. read "to substantiate the athletes' real-life experiences scientifically"
Example sentence:

Although this theory makes a certain amount of sense and corresponds with many athletes\' real-life experiences with stitches, the reasoning falls apart on close inspection.

Fazey and Hardy (1988) felt that this does not reflect athletes\' real-life experiences.
