Pressure/hydrocarbons trapped in retrieved
components
Subsea equipment retrieved from the seabed could contain
• trapped pressure in various control system components, e.g. behind
a sealing poppet valve
• trapped production system pressure and/or hydrocarbons in
components that were exposed to produced fluids, e.g. inside the
choke insert
• other pressurized fluids, e.g. inside the barrier fluid system in a
subsea pump.
Careful consideration should be given to how fluids could be trapped in
unintended areas of the retrieved equipment due to various seal failures
that could have occurred in service.
Extreme care should be exercised when investigating/disassembling
retrieved equipment that may be internally pressured, particularly as
the remaining integrity of aged/degraded equipment might no longer be
adequate to contain the pressure, e.g. when removing small bore threaded
fittings from components, corroded threads can give way and let the *fitting
blowout* with considerable pressure behind it, prior to the fitting weeping
as would be normally expected as it is gradually backed off.
Relieving trapped pressure from behind a component (e.g. a plug or a
fitting) via a single outlet is not a guarantee that the pressure has in fact
been relieved because the intended relief path might actually be blocked
(especially on equipment that has been in service), and this might not be
obvious to the person conducting the operation.
The best way to prove that no trapped pressure exists behind a component
is (when possible) to pump through the cavity behind the component,
i.e. via separate inlet and outlet points, and then bleed off any remaining
pressure.
In all cases, personnel should always take care to keep all body parts
(and other personnel) out of the way of any potential projectile path.
