French term

polygones en bec écrasé

French to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting type of drapery folds
Description of a statue of a female saint.

I've come across some examples of beak folds (though usually in inverted commas) but nothing promising for this.

@Moira I guess that would be more of a duck's beak ;) I know it took me ages to research this last time. I hope some of the links will help you.

Thanks, Helen The KudoZ search facility leaves much to be desired... However, it doesn't explain this phrase used elsewhere: "les plis principaux sont en forme de U en bec" - unless it's the belt-and-braces approach!
