Spanish term

la pelota al pie

Spanish to English Other Sports / Fitness / Recreation idiomatic expression
An Argentine soccer player remembering the 86 World Cup:

Impresionante el Tata, te daba la sensación de un Mariscal. Y con la pelota al pie, que él en su puta vida hacía eso. Yo creo que fue el pico de su carrera, nunca jugó así: el mérito es hacerlo ahí.

Clearly a specific move, but I have no idea what!!

Thanks

with the ball at his feet

"Tata (José Luis Brown) was impressive, he was like a marshall ( to the team); and with the ball at his feet, he always did this throughout his effing career!. I think it was his peak career moment, he never played like that; the trick is to do it up there "( i.e, on the biggest stage of all, a World Cup final)

José Luis Brown was a defender, who scored the first goal of the game in Argentina's 3-2 victory over Germany in the final:

agree Adrian MM. (X) : just read cgowar's comment - as an aside, the force of 'en su puta vida' may be a throwaway and have the milder connotation of 'who, for the life of him...'

Thanks!
agree Cecilia Gowar : But you are misunderstanding the phrase "él en su puta vida hacía eso", which has a negative implicit in it. Tata never played in that elegant style, which is why it was impressive on this occasion when he did.

Sorry, yes you're right!- an error on my part;

Thanks
agree Robert Carter : That's it, although I've a feeling the "mariscal" part is more a reference to an American football "quarterback" (mariscal de campo). Agree with Adrian's "for the life of him" comment, too.

agree JohnMcDove : Agree with Adrian and cgowar. As for "mariscal" I doubt very much any reference to the American f "quarterback", as there is no awareness of that in Argentina. Maybe México, but the rest of South America...?

with the ball against his foot

Una posibilidad.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Andrew Bramhall : you kick a ball AGAINST a player's foot, but he HAS the ball at his feet;// ' against his foot' is a way of locating the position of the ball at a given moment, but when as player makes a forward run with the ball, he is said to have the ball at his feet.

I admit that soccer isn't too popular here in the USA, but whether the ball is hit with the tip of the toes, or against the side of the foot, the ball is always against some part of the foot.

with the ball at his feet/carrying the ball

Tata (José Luis Brown) was a defender who usually booted the ball upfield but in this instance he uncharacteristically played the ball out of defence.

"Who is the world's fastest footballer while dribbling with the ball at his feet"

http://soccerthought.com/dribbling-v-carrying-the-ball/
"Watching the Euros this summer, I couldn’t help but notice Pirlo’s role on the Italian team–he didn’t necessarily beat defenders with the dribble, but he dribbled a lot. The phrase for how he plays is called “carrying the ball.” In fact, the Italian team ran their offense through him. So, if you watched the Italians play, you would see an older, long haired Italian circling around the ball, receiving it, then “carrying” the ball around the field, drawing pressure to him, then distributing. In the picture to the left, you will notice he is scanning the field with the ball at his feet – a typical Pirlo siting."

dribbling the ball

a dribble is one of the most difficult ball skills to master and one of the most useful attacking moves. In typical game play, players attempt to propel the ball toward their opponents' goal through individual control of the ball, such as by dribbling (the usage of technical maneuvers). Dribbling can involve a wide variety of manipulative tricks and feints in order to go past an opponent
