French term

paquet ganglionnaire

French to English Medical Medical (general) lymphatic spread
Hi everyone,

I am translating the report of histology and CT imaging investigations in a cancer patient. It is thought that this is renal in origin but most of the report focuses on lymphatic spread. I would very much appreciate any suggestions for translation of the term ‘paquet ganglionnaire’.

On rappelle que le paquet ganglionnaire envahit la veine cave inférieure, thrombose la veine renale droite et est donc responsable d’un important réseau de dérivation avec shunt cavo-mésenterique.

I think it refers to spread of metastases from enlarged lymph nodes to blood vessels. Any clarification on the pathology and suggestions as how to translate ‘paquet ganglionnaire’ would be very much appreciated.

thanks Phil, I did see that but like you I wasn't sure it was reliable. I think there needs to be a pathological element perhaps.

The second Google hit (which is Linguee, and therefore not necessarily reliable) says "bundle of lymph nodes".

cluster of lymph nodes

Perhaps more context would prove me wrong but I don't read anything necessarily sinister implied by the word "paquet". Instead, to me it simply implies a collection. Conglomerate, by contrast, has a decidedly nasty connotation.

Reaching deep into my extensive repertoire of medically idiomatic language, I would have to say "cluster". ;-)
Note from asker:
Dear Michael, Thanks a million for your help! I wasn't sure whether there was a more specialist term and cluster doesn't preclude pathology (which there definitely was in this case). Sue
sorry for the delay Michael I though I had already selected your answer.
