French term

Inhibiteur de détrompeur de carburant

French to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks Vehicle parts
In a list of vehicle parts - it seems to be a pin (or other device) located in the fuel filling hole to prevent filling petrol in a diesel vehicle. Is there a particular name for this in English?
Proposed translations (English)

Discussion

Daryo Jun 11, 2016:
agree on that it's not a case that a more nicely sounding translation could have been used, it's a case when the intended meaning was EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE!
philgoddard Jun 10, 2016:
I think you should tell the customer the translation is wrong. It's the kind of thing a proofreader might not notice.
Michael Davies (asker) Jun 10, 2016:
Misfuelling prevention device I have used 'misfuelling' rather than 'misfuel' in my translation, thanks for your assistance, Carolien :-)

misfuelling prevention override adapter

It's not a misfuelling prevention device (which would be 'détrompeur de carburant') but rather the opposite, a gadget that overrides this device!
Note from asker:
You could, possibly, be right. I hadn't considered that eventuality but I'll wait and see if there is a correction from the proofreader or client since I have already delivered.

agree Tony M : That does make more sense!

Thank you, Tony
agree Philippe Etienne : Thought it could be for engines that can burn various types of fuel by turning some handle (military), but I see from your ref it's for non-EU fuel dispensers.

Merci Philippe!
agree Didier Fourcot : Useless in Europe, however exists in French and could just as well be useful in English

Merci Didier!
agree philgoddard : Can someone explain why I'd want to buy one of these?

As the page says, you may need it when driving to countries where fuel nozzles don't conform to first world standards
agree Daryo : may sound weird or counter-intuitive, but that is what is means!

misfuel prevention device

Volkswagen : "Fitted on the filler neck of the Diesel fuel tank, the Misfuel Prevention Device has a mechanically locking flap that prevents a non-Diesel fuel nozzle from being inserted."

"Having fitted a Misfuelling Prevention Device after my wife filling up my brand new A3 I can testify it's a money saver....she blames being pregnant." Simon

neutral Tony M : But that misses out the admittedly rather puzzling 'inhibiteur'

disagree Philippe Etienne : I think it's the exact opposite

disagree Didier Fourcot : This is the translation of "détrompeur", the device that has to be inhibited!

disagree Daryo : in this specific ST it's the OPPOSITE = it's about preventing the prevention device from operating!
