19th century sea-faring documents
I'm translating from 19th century documents relating to the presence of the American Navy in the Port of Mahon. There are numerous extracts from ships logs, contemporary diaries and so on. This extract comes from a diary written in 1816 in Mahon by a Menorcan historian/man of letters.
Extract from diary 1816:
La fragata del commodoro Shaw, debiendo ser admitida a plática, bajo hasta delante de la Aduana donde ha fondeado y está siendo aparejada.
The context is a dispute between the Customs house and Shaw's frigate regarding reembarcation of its cargo without paying an enormous fee. The gesture is threatening and at this point it's who blinks first...
so the phrase is: "debe ser admitida a platica"
Is anyone familiar with the phrase? I see it as something like "has become a conversation piece..." "is a talking point" ..at a stretch - "...is on everyone's lips..."
