Concordo com você, Douglas Bissell!

Douglas Bissell Apr 14, 2016:
Clearly the question here is to distinguish between the two terms as if they were used separately, both would be considered to mean "Passed". In this case, Aprovado is obviously 'Passed' so Aproveitamento may mean credit transfer as my colleague said or just that the person attended the course and it was not graded.

credit transfer

Como Matheus disse, há varias possibilidades... se for uma referência a "aproveitamento de estudos", através do qual o aluno usa os créditos que obteve em outra instituição ou em outra faculdade da mesma universidade...

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think "credit transfer" is the most appropriate in this case, thanks"

success rate; successful completion

It can mean different things... among them:

1) the success rate / achievement rate of the student (expressed as a percentage, for example)

2) whether the student has passed the subject or not

3) whether the subject was completed in another university (o aluno teria aproveitado disciplinas cursadas em outra universidade)

My suggestions are for the first two possibilities, which are more likely, in my opinion. Maybe someone has a better suggestion or a different opinion on that.
Note from asker:
Thanks Matheus, I think the third suggestion was the closest in this case

pass/ grade/ mark

Definitions in Oxford Dic
pass: (Of a candidate) be successful in (an examination, test, or course)
grade: (chiefly North American) A mark indicating the quality of a student’s work
mark: A figure or letter representing the total number of marks awarded in an examination or competition and signifying a person’s score
Example sentence:

she passed her driving test; I got good grades last semester

The problems in the evaluation system is not limited to the disparity in marks between different universities.

Achievement

"Aprovado" could be a yes/no pass or fail situation
"Aproveitamento" can indicate what the actual grade was, or can be an explanation of what progress was achieved, evening the case of a student not passing on to the next stage/year.
