English term

burdened by previous

English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Novel
The other animals who have told their stories here are not as burdened by previous and often foolhardy attempts at cross-species communication as I feel I am.

I could not undertsand the sentence. Does it say, "other animals are not able to communicate to other species as i am?"

How can you explain it in other words.

Discussion

philgoddard Mar 8, 2016:
You've probably gathered this, but the style of the English is slightly grandiloquent for humorous effect. Normally it's wrong to write in such a way that the reader has to stop and think what's going on here. But here it's OK.
Sheila Wilson Mar 8, 2016:
Who or what does "I" refer to here? Is this a person, or is it some animal being personified? I'm not sure it makes any difference to the answer, but it just might help.

suffering inhibitions due to previous failed attempts

The other animals were able to communicate, but the speaker had made previous, unsuccessful attempts at cross-species communication, which makes him or her nervous about trying again.
