lower crankcase
Some crankcases are one piece with the sump closing off the bottom and the cylinder head at the top. Other crankcases may be split into upper and lower halves with the upper half holding the cylinders and the lower half bolted up under the crank.
The lower crankcase is constructed of squeeze cast aluminium alloy. Four bolts per bulkhead are used to fasten the two sections for strength and rigidity. Dowels provide alignment for the two halves.
