I can't decide on the best term to use for "thermique": combustion? diesel? (= over-translation) thermal? engines? etc. Any ideas?

I should perhaps have pointed out that this is very often abbreviated to IC (sometimes i/c) in normal use.

I doubt most EN readers would understand what a 'thermal train' was. It's a very common 'faux ami', like your 'thermal lawn-mower'.

: No, not "thermal"! Various refs. point to diesel, but then there's e.g. "Moteur thermique essence ou diesel", so I think I'd go with what you've suggested.

The job was very urgent, and had to be delivered yesterday; I chose "internal combustion", in the assumption that coal-fired locomotives are no longer in use in the country in question!
