@ Helena I agree 100% with you. Unfortunately, the incorrect answer was chosen, perhaps inadvertently. The Asker may not be too familiar with how the grading works? You can go to the top right of page and "contribute to this entry". Warm regards. Saludos.
Helena Chavarria Aug 20, 2015:
@Arami IMHO you have made a mistake. To start off with, galvanised metal is not aluminium and you asked for the translation of 'cupertina', not 'chapa'.

Your text refers to galvanised sheets used to fill the gaps in a roof, to prevent water, etc. from filtering inside.
@Helena I agree, and I do think that the safest option -- barring further detail from Arami -- is your suggestion.

I've translated a good number of construction documents from Argentine Spanish and have seen the term "zinquería" many times. It was precisely the forum that you quote that gave me the translation I needed the first time I saw it:-)

Helena Chavarria Aug 12, 2015:
@Elizabeth We've both tried our best. I just hope we've managed to help Arami ;-)

Here's part of a discussion in another forum:

I've just come across this term in the specifications for a house. In Argentina corrugated galvanized iron sheeting is used for roofs, and there are many other uses of galvanized sheet metal for details and flashings etc. Since the galvanization process uses zinc, which is a much shorter word than galvanized, the term "zinquerías" seems to be used to refer to this in general, while metal sheeting in general is referred to as "chapas". In UK we often refer to "galvanized sheet metal" as "galvy", but it's a very sloppy colloquialism, almost affectionate, not suitable for a technical spec.

Helena's suggestion of "flashing" may be the best option, as there are many different kinds, including one called "coping flashing". See

http://www.ziprib.com/photo_gallery.aspx?ID=51

Coping, as I mentioned, is a kind of flashing.
"Zinguería" refers to construction elements that are galvanized with zinc.
Helena Chavarria Aug 12, 2015:
So you can compare 'flashing' and 'coping'

At first I agreed with neilmac's possible translation, but then did a bit of research and found a doc that mentions the term four times. It seems to be a kind of protective panel of some sort.

For some reason, the doc downloads but I can't get its URL, but if you google the following phrase, you'll find it.

Como protección de la membrana asfáltica se colocará una cupertina de chapa ... edificio se colocarán protecciones (cupertinas)

Me parece que se trata de un diminutivo de "cubierta" https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cubierta

As Elizabeth notes above, "It seems to be a kind of protective panel of some sort"... which I believe I've covered with "metallic roof covering". I can't find any more specific term for it in English though.

I first thought it might be "flashing", but coping is a particular kind of flashing used to protect the tops of construction elements, and since the original says "coronamiento del edificio" as opposed to the "tejado" itself, it seems to me to be more likely. Moreover, the diagrams in Spanish and English to match pretty well.

Finally, it seems to me that the word "cupertina" is a modification of the English "coping".

(roof) flashing/profile filler

Profile fillers
Profile Fillers, also known as "closures", provide a means of closing the cavities at the ridge and the eaves and exclude rain, snow, wind driven debris and birds although birds have been know to peck at these. They are supplied in pairs, the one half (eaves) is fitted underneath the sheet usually on the bottom of the run where It fills the gap between the underneath of the sheet and the wall plate and the other half (ridge) is fitted on the top of the sheet where It fills the gap between the top of the sheet and the underneath of the ridge capping or Bargeboard.

As far as I can tell, there seem to be a number of names: closure, filler, flashing, etc.

I think it refers to the profiles that close cavities in roofs and eaves. I can't find the name in US English though.
