English term

a light continental breakfast

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Menu
I am translating a menu and it reads like this

"you can also have a light continental breakfast along with the following choices"
-Waffels
-Eggs Benedicts
-Omeltte
-Big breakfast
and etc.

What should I expect when talking about the light continental breakfast? My understanding is that the customer can choose the continental breakfast plus the listed choices, but another person said the listed choices are the continental breakfast.

Can anyone help me confirm if my understanding is correct. Thanks.

Jul 30, 2015 12:51: Yvonne Gallagher changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (3): Graham Allen-Rawlings, Tony M, Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

If I had to guess... The light continental breakfast is probably free (included) and the other choices are at extra charge.

usually bread, croissants, other cold items

"My understanding is that the customer can choose the continental breakfast plus the listed choices,"

You are correct, the other person is wrong!

The other listed choice are an alternatve (or in addition!) to the 'continental breakfast' — this is made abundantly clear by the type of items listed, including specifically the final item 'big breakfast'.

@ Gallagy

Sorry if I've ruffled your feathers, I just wanted to contribute something, expressing it in a slightly different fashion; I'm afraid I don't have time to follow other people's links, I prefer to be more explicit in my anwser; and I'm afraid I hadn't seen your note @ 10 minutes, as I failed to refresh the page before submitting my answer — mea culpa, but I often visit a page as soon as the notification comes in, leave it open, and then only see subsequent postings once the page refreshes after I've posted.

agree Cilian O'Tuama : exactly, alternative or addition, "plus" (or "along with") is the wrong word.

Thanks, Cillian! I agree that 'along with' is a little awkward, but I think the're trying to make it clear that it isn't an either/or choice — in other words, you can have it ALl if you want!

no hot cooked (greasy/fried) food

a LIGHT continental breakfast would include some bread/pastry jam/fruit/yoghurt and beverage(s) but not usually cooked foods

so, if someone is hungry they can opt to add some extra cooked items to the continental breakfast like in your list. So your understanding "that the customer can choose the continental breakfast plus the listed choices" is correct

some continental breakfasts may also include cheese/cold meats. Obviously it can vary from country to country across Europe...

Thanks! That's what I think of the light continental breakfast. Thanks for confirming.

Rolls and jam

Yes, the above posters are right, as are you in your initial reading.

It is also worth noting that the menu, as quoted, reads quite oddly in English. Which might be of interest to you as translator! If so, it could be discussed.

What's odd is a menu that says, among other things: "you can also have a light continental breakfast along with ...Big breakfast." And a few other things.

Not sure whether you're concerned with the writing of the original text, though.

Before you crush me with your incredulity, my colleagues, have pity; consider how lonely I must be with only the OED for company
…well, and Merriam Webster
…and Random House
...and American Heritage, if you like it
…all the dictionaries are lousy, I know ;) But in truth there really is a definitive answer to this question.
Yes, I should have included the drink part (coffee).

Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : I can't really see anything that reads "oddly" in the source text — apart from the typos on 'omelette'/ 'waffles', and the spurious 's' on benedicts; and (if it is part of the text, rather than Asker's addition) the 'and etc.' at the end.

If you want to talk typos, and I wasn't, you could mention the spelling of waffles, the capitalization of "Big breakfast", and so forth. But that's not what's odd.
neutral Cilian O'Tuama : disagree with your CL5 rolls&jam, but agree that Q is oddly/poorly worded. Would be clearer with "and/or" instead of "along with". // Clear? Maybe. But claiming "rolls and jam" as THE (CL5) definitive answer...?

1) Oxford dictionary definition of continental breakfast: "A light breakfast, typically consisting of coffee and rolls with butter and jam." Honestly, breakfasts served may vary from country to country, but the meaning of the phrase is clear.
