All of these pathways are closely interconnected; thus, when a regulator activates the cascade of a certain cell fate, it will simultaneously repress a mutually exclusive cell fate. For example, the decision of a cell to end in matrix producer or sporulating will depend on the intracellular level of Spo0A-P. High levels of Spo0A-P activate the sporulation pathway and low levels derepress the regulatory SinI/SinR system that directly triggers expression of genes involved in production of the extracellular matrix (Lopez et al., 2010; Lopez and Kolter, 2010a). The development of signaling systems that allow cells within the population to communicate contributes to the coordination of all of these pathways in order to generate the proper response to any environmental cue (for a more in-depth consideration, see (Lopez and Kolter, 2010a; Lopez et al., 2009b)).
