trunk (trunking)
Look for this term in relation to buildings and you'll find how it is used. Yess this is the building innards ... plumbing, wiring, etc.

As in 'mains trunking' and 'trunk and branch plumbing" ... and more

Or ... you can combine mine and Agneta's suggestion ... service trunking! ;-)

Ducting is different... involves the details of the trunking. You'll likely see ducting for the wiring of the trunk lines, and such, and for ventilation, if there's central ventilation for your building.

Note from asker:
I'd just got to "ducting" - same thing or different? |

: I have wrecked this! My answer to Agneta's suggestion should be here and the following sentence under Agneta's suggestions.

Concede on the plural, but my reference indicates the root 'trunk' is used as the term of choice for the construction design where all utilities are installed in a single 'column' in buildings, tho larger buildings may have more than one such column.

service conduit
Water, electricity etc. plumbing, pipes, conduits generally - good article here http://www.dinbyggare.se/communicate/artiklar/article.aspx?i...
And stomme isn't really shell but the loadbearing framework, which could be timber or steel or other material - see here http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stomme

Swedish term (edited):
stammar
utilities
Note that the word required to be translated is 'stammar' not just 'stam'.
We need to translate this into something easily understood by monoglot anglophones.
Stammar covers the distribution of all services/utilities in a building, and their connection to the network suppliers, as Agneta's reference clearly explains.
Utilities Distribution System would be better but I think Utilities alone is simpler and probably enough.

Oh dear, it gets worse, I need my stammar changing!
Deane: I think Trunk is too literal.
Agneta: Service conduit is but part of the distribution system and is a possible translation of Stam (singular), whereas Stammar is the whole system.
I am sorry, folks, for this wreckage. I hope Chris can salvage something.

Discussion
This has the advantage of less visible piping, which looks nice. Once in a while, however, every ten years or so, there will be "stambyte". This means that all the main pipes within the shaft are replaced. Bathrooms are usually refurbished as part of this process. Live long enough in Sweden, and you can be sure to experience the curse of stambyte!
Stambyte actually has an entry in Rikstermbanken:
Definition: byte av tappvatten- och avloppsrör
Anmärkning: Om nödvändigt värmerör i badrumsgolv. Byte av tätskikt i badrum.
