Spanish term

Alteracion cualitativa de la relacion social

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Health Care Psychology
This is from a psychologist's assessment report on a child with learning difficulties. Country of origin SPAIN.

The term appears in the report's conclusion

"Como conclusion final podemos decir que XXXXX si tiene algunas caracteristicas comunes del Sindrome de Asperger, ubicado dentro de los Trastornos generalizados del desarrollo como por ejemplo:
- *Alteracion cualitativa de la relacion social*. Emocionalmente desconectado de los otros. .....etc.

Although I understand the concept, I am unsure of the correct term in (British) English. Also from what I've read on the subject, one of the criteria used in diagnosing Autism/Aspergers is
"alteracion cualitativa de la interaccion social". Is this the same thing?

Thank you in advance for help / suggestions.

Hi
Yes I think they are interchangeable

However, note Jackie Bowman's comment
Note from asker:
Thank you Liz. V helpful as usual. So, do you think the 2 terms are interchangeable? ie. alteracion cualitativa de la relacion social/interaccion social ?
Peer comment(s):

agree Jackie Bowman : Yes, this seems to be a standard term in the literature.

Your (interaction/relationship)

It's clearly referring to the relationship in this case as the bond, I think it's a step further from interaction, I would go with social relationship that's widely use in the same sense in English but you can clearly see that they use them interchangeably in this examples:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18758667
http://www.hindawi.com/journals/isrn/2013/201719/

As for qualitative, that's just it, for example here (speaking of autism although it would be the same for Asperger's):

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV), autistic characteristics in social interaction and communication are described as qualitative impairments.

qualitative struggle with social relationships

Since your doctor has stated that he is 'emotionally disconnected from others' (Emocionalmente desconectado de los otros)...you can view the translation you are seeking in two ways:

-qualitative struggle with social relationships
-qualitative distress with social relationships

Both would work well.

I hope that helps.

marked deterioration in social relationships

I don't think anything approaching a literal translation will work here.
