Spanish term

El dosificador

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Automotive / Cars & Trucks
Hello all,

I'm translating a document from Mexican Spanish to American English. It's a regulation on motor vehicle emissions and I'm having trouble with one of the terms. Here's the context:

"Los sistemas 080 deberán identificar y registrar una falla cuando exista mal funcionamiento del motor que afecte el rendimiento en materia de emisiones y del sistema de post-tratamiento, para informar sobre bajo nivel del reactivo o falla del dosificador, o de las medidas que impidan el funcionamiento normal cuando se detecta ausencia de reactivo."

My translation is:

"The 080 Systems must identify and record a flaw when there is a motor malfunction that affects performance related to emissions and the aftertreatment system in order to report on a low level of the reagent or distributor or the measures preventing normal functioning when lack of reagent is detected."

Is "distributor" the correct equivalent? Any help would be appreciated!

slothm Jan 17, 2015:
Dosifier The word "dosifier" is applied to tha apparatus used to discharge precise quantities of Urea and is mentioned as such in the literature.

Charles Davis Jan 17, 2015:
@slothm Because the device that is called a "dosificador" is called a "dispenser" in English. This is true in many other contexts, in fact.

As far as I know there is no such thing as a "dispensador".

You surely can't be seriously suggesting that language equivalents are by definition cognates?

If you think this device is called a dosificator in English, you need to provide documentary evidence to support it. You've provide lots of documentary evidence but none that supports this, unless I missed it.
slothm Jan 17, 2015:
Interpretation. The text is clear,
"del sistema de post-tratamiento, para informar sobre bajo nivel del reactivo o falla del dosificador,..."

"Post tratamiento" is clearly option b.

Why does the text refer to "dosificador" and not to "dispensador"?

Dosificador = dosifier.

Dispensador = dispenser.

I strongly recommend not changin the authors intention.
Charles Davis Jan 17, 2015:
What the dispenser does is indeed called "dosing", as is illustrated by some of slothm's references (the reagent itself is basically urea), but the device itself does not seem to be called a dosifier anywhere, or hardly anywhere. Instances of "dosifier" in slothm's long list of references all, as far as I can see, apply to other contexts, not SCR.
Charles Davis Jan 17, 2015:
Context This is from Appendix B of NOM-044-SEMARNAT-2006. It's about treatment of diesel engine emissions. "080" should be "OBD" (on-board detection):

" B.2 Los sistemas OBD deberán identificar y registrar una falla cuando exista mal funcionamiento del motor que afecte el rendimiento en materia de emisiones y del sistema de post-tratamiento, para informar sobre bajo nivel del reactivo o falla del dosificador, o de las medidas que impidan el funcionamiento normal cuando se detecta ausencia de reactivo. [...]."

It's referring to selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, such as Bosch's Denoxtronic, which inject a reagent, Adblue in Bosch's case, into exhaust gases. The "dosificador" is the device that supplies the appropriate amount of reagent for injection. In this very specific context it's normally called the dispenser:

"Description of the components that make up the exhaust gases treatment system such as:
· AdBlue tank.
· Combined sensor of the filling and temperature level of AdBlue in the tank.
· AdBlue tank heater valve.
· Temperature sensor of exhaust gases.
· Dispenser.
· AdBlue injector. [...]"

(fuel) injector

'reactivo' it seems means fuel.

Otherwise, in an emissions control system, the only component 'reactivo' is the catalytic converter, which causes a reaction in the exhaust gases.

Anything else doesn't make sense.

The dosifier

Newer internal combustion engines must comply with strict legislatiom concerning emissions.

a) Motors now can use almost any fuel. When changing from one fuel to another a dosifier administrates the right quantity of air to reduce polution. Failure of the dosifier may cause bad emissions.

b) A new technology has been introduced that introduces Urea into the hot gases of a second muffler by means of a dosifier. The chemical reaction decreases almost all of the dangerous Nitrogen oxides. Malfunction of the dosifier may cause emissions.

Both items, a and b, requieres a dosifier.

neutral Charles Davis : The context is item (b), not item (a). Can you supply any references that show that the device that doses urea is called a "dosifier" rather than a "dispenser"? I can't find any among those you have cited.
