English term

self-contained

Non-PRO English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
I hope this isn't too daft a question, but I'm having a bit of a problem trying to explain to a foreigner what "self-contained" means in the following, taken from a Pre-Intermediate English course book:

If you are late boarding and have your choice of middle seats, go for the one up front near the exit.

Check out the aisle and window passengers. Do they look like they will be self-contained and give you plenty of room? Observe their body language and trust your instincts.

Capture as much personal space as you can. Dominate the two armrests. ......

It must mean that they keep to themselves and don't disturb you as a middle-seat passenger, but am I missing something? Would be grateful for clarification.

Yes, that makes sense. Guess I was just projecting...

Although I agree that it can refer to being left in peace, I do not believe that is what's meant here for two reasons.
1) We are talking about a passenger in the middle seat... and you can be just as easily engaged in conversation regardless of which seat you occupy.
2) The passenger is being advised to capture personals space and dominate armrests.

It is not sure from this short excerpt whether the person being advised is only anxious to have plenty of room (physically) or whether there is also an element of being left in peace. In this wider context self-contained will also mean keeping themselves to themselves, not trying to engage the other passenger in conversation etc. That would be the more usual meaning of self-contained (German - reserviert, zurückgezogen).

Do these people look like they will mind their own business? I think, from the lines "Capture as much personal space as you can. Dominate the armrest...." that you have read it correctly.
