Estamos hablando de una escuela en una comunidad o barrio pobre en Michigan, USA
No acabo de entender esta expresión y no la encuentro en ninguna parte como modismo. ¿Alguien tiene alguna ayuda? El contexto es que la directora de una escuela en un barrio pobre de Michigan está contándole a un periodista sobre las realidades de la escuela que dirige. Entonces dice:

: En español de España, desde mi punto de vista, esta expresión no solo no suena natural sino que es ambigua (si decimos que alguien vive "de pago en pago", yo lo primero que pienso es que tiene muchas deudas, que no es exactamente lo mismo)
