I knew that this translation was literal... my point was to create another compound word that would reflect the difference between vrcholovy and vykonnostni, since there are two separate questions for two separate compounds on the Kudoz.

I can't see any real difference between the two terms.
"vrcholový sport" = (according to my dic.) "směrující k nejvyím výkonům (v st. reprezentaci)"
