El médico Eduardo Xalabarder, uno de los socios más activos de la Academia de Higiene de Cataluña, publicaba en 1896 un trabajo sobre la “la mortalidad de las poblaciones rurales catalanas y de las disposiciones higiénicas más prácticas y eficaces que podrían dictarse para disminuirla” (1896: 25-29). Para Xalabarder (1896: 25) el mito de la salud rural estaba lejos de ser una realidad, “el contingente de mortalidad en esas poblaciones era más que respetable [...] a excepción del hacinamiento, en las poblaciones rurales catalanas de finales del siglo XIX se podían encontrar las mismas causas de mortalidad que en una gran ciudad, además de mostrar un mayor desconocimiento de los preceptos básicos de la higiene”.

overpopulated
I think perhaps "overcrowded" is more for a particular building or room (a bar for example), and isn't really right for a village/town etc. "with the exception of the overpopulated rural settlements etc"
