As other people seem to think this means fails to close, I'm not 100% sure, but from the info given, it seems to me than when it closes, it fails and therefore the bypass is needed to keep it cold.

agree Andy Watkinson : Hi Nikki. That's exactly my point (badly explained as it is). That's why I'd add "proper" to the answer above. It's not that it "fails to close" but "fails when closing" or "fails to close properly/correctly".

But there's a hige diference between "fails when closing" and "fails to close...". I think that something goes wrong WHEN the valve closes, not because it doesn't close.

"fails to close" seems to be a fairly accepted way of phrasing it according to many websites.All the best
