French term

gestion des matières

French to English Other Environment & Ecology
Target=UK

Context: a website on baby foods. Paragraph concerning the company's environment-friendly policies.

The problem is trying to identify what 'matières', to find a suitable translation. Any ideas on how to deal with this, or should I ask the client?
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): philgoddard

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

manage resources effectively/sustainably

I don't feel that either of the two previous answers fits the context.

I would normally translate it as 'materials management' if it were (say) a department or function within a company. However, the French says 'qui respectent l’environnement et la gestion des matières', and 'respect the environment and materials/resource management' doesn't make sense.

My first thought was 'materials management', and I was wrong to mark this question as non-pro. The answer is not as obvious as it looks.

I'm glad at least one person has understood the difficulty. Thank you for your suggestion.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I chose this. For some reason KudoZ didn't register it, so I'm saying it again. This fitted my context although I've used materials instead of resources. Thank you to everyone for your answers. Materials management is of course fine and would work in many situations."

agree [Unavailable] : "Materials" is more general than "resources", as it includes any by-products etc.

Thanks. Actually, it's less general in the sense that it does not include human resources, financial resources etc.
agree nweatherdon : seems highly likely in this case, particularly being in relation to production processes
