Spanish term

abuso del indicador deviene enfermizo

Spanish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Pharmaceutical industry
"...abuse/overuse of the indicator becomes unhealthy??"

use of indicators becomes obsessive

or "use of indicators turns into an obsession"

another option among the many others.
Peer comment(s):

agree Charles Davis : I think "obsessive" is a very good idea for "enfermizo", though I'd say "overuse of the indicator", because it's "abuso" and it's one particular indicator. // I see your point; "use" probably better :)

I did think about that but I wonder if using 'overuse' with 'obsessive' is well... overdoing it a little :)
agree neilmac : "... can become an obsession" removes some sting IMO...

the indicator is systematically overused

= the indicator become the end rather than the means / a knee-jerk reaction

Although you'd need to do soething to avoid reapeating "systematic" in the following bit...

use of the indicator takes on unhealthy proportions

This stays a bit closer to the source text.
Personally, I find 'abuso' in combination with 'deviene enfermizo' somewhat repetitive, so I would use the word 'use' instead of abuse/misuse/overuse.

Spanish term (edited): abuso del indicador deviene enfermizo

overuse of the indicator threatens its integrity

Another option to mull.

From Encarta English dictionary:

integrity
3. the state of being sound or undamaged

*******************

So the opposite of "enfermizo" then... Could work.
