merci à tous pour vos réponses et réflexions
Tony M Apr 7, 2013:
Indeed! Thank you for your kind words!

It is very often a matter of 'decoding' — and of course I am never SURE either, I just give you my reasoning... for what it's worth ;-)
Babelworth (asker) Apr 7, 2013:
Thanks Tony, am always amazed by the depth of your "insights", and things are getting clearer to me from what you said ... I mean no disrespect to Indian colleagues but sometimes they have such a “different” phrase formulation…
Tony M Apr 7, 2013:
Not really :-( While one might think so for piping, where the flow of water etc. will be directional, I don't think to for electricity, where the notion isn't quite the same. I'd expect to see that expressed by ideas like incoming / outgoing etc.

If you start from the principle of 'on machine' simply means 'fitted on the machine', then it all make sense.

It's natural enough that the 'off machine' stuff wouldn't be supplied, but the more important exclusion here that actually needs stating explicitly is any of the 'on machine' stuff — there could be a grey area: "Is that part of the machine, or part of the installation?"
Babelworth (asker) Apr 7, 2013:
thanks for your suggestions tony, I was thinking of:

ON = (coming) to the machine
OFF= (leaving) from the machine

Do you think this may make sense?
Tony M Apr 7, 2013:
Then... ...I think the sense you need to translate is 'piping that is fitted on the machine or fitted external to the machine' etc.
Babelworth (asker) Apr 7, 2013:
It's a list of what vendor will supply with machine, "excluded" items will be the responsibility of buyer
Tony M Apr 7, 2013:
Context? If these are 'exclusions', please tell us from what they are being excluded?

marche et arrêt

Ma suggestion est pour la traduction, pas une explication :
Toutes conduites machine de marche/arrêt
Tout câblage électrique machine de marche/arrêt

Suivant le contexte de votre traduction (présence d'étiquettes ou non) on pourra même garder ON et OFF (câblage ON et OFF)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : 'Fraid not, it is clear from the context that it has a quite different meaning here. / On-Off in this sense would be meaningless when applied to piping (or even wiring) — we just wouldn't use the terms like that in EN; 'On/Off button', yes!

Vous avez sans doute plus d'informations que les autres sur le contexte!

intégré ou extérieur

Like I explained in my discussion post — but very unsure how best to actually formulate it in FR.

Note that 'on' here has the usual preposition meaning of 'sur'.

interne / externe

Based on the discussion.

Tout câblage électrique machine interne et externe

(although it's not clear to me why the customer would have to supply electrical wiring inside the machine they're buying?)

That makes more sense. Still not sure how to translate though.

Doesn't "externe" convey that meaning well enough on its own?

Tout câblage électrique machine externe (y compris ceux montés sur la machine) ???
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : That's exactly the problem, Marc: it wouldn't be literally internal wiring, but wiring on the outside of the machine, but fitted onto it; for example, the cable leading inside a piece of conduit on the machine to the actual connecting box.
