This is from an academic paper on informal employment in Argentina. While I am quite sure that "the self-employed" is the right term form cuentapropista (though it could also be outsourcers), I am not sure if the most appropriate word for "patrones" in this particular context is employers or bosses or...
So the question, rather than the meaning, is which term is most accepted in this context.

Entre los trabajadores asalariados (76% del total de los ocupados), la informalidad, medida como ausencia de registro de contribuciones a la seguridad social, rondaría el 38%, mientras que entre los trabajadores independientes (patrones y cuentapropistas) se ubicaría en el 58%.

directors and the self-employed
There is a law in Argentina that requires all company directors to register as self-employed, so they are not technically considered within the "employed" category while not exactly being "cuentapropistas" either. (They may get a salary for their regular work, while being required to contribute as self-employed for their directors' fees.)

: Not necessarily directors. You and I own our own businesses, but we're not directors.

The law, and the context, refers specifically to directors (which all companies must have to be incorporated). You and I are cuentapropistas.

: "Business owners" would be clearer. I think the distinction is between those who own businesses (possibly limited companies, possibly employing others), and sole traders.
