French term

chèvre à deux becs

French to English Art/Literary Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
It is referring to a piece of wine bottling equipment made famous by Henri Jayer. I found a picture of it here: http://domainedavidclark.blogspot.com.au/2009/04/chevre-deux... where I see the French term is retained. Just wondering if anyone knew of any similar English term? Worse case scenario, I will leave it in French, but would ideally like to have an English equivalent.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion

Wendy Streitparth Mar 11, 2013:
How about something along the lines of "dual head filling/bottling spigot"
French2English Mar 11, 2013:
Nope, no English term. You could perhaps paraphrase it with something like 'double-spouted barrel tap' but I am sure you have thought of that!
Emily Plank (asker) Mar 11, 2013:
No, there doesn't seem to be a direct English equivalent. Perhaps some wine-making experts out there may be able to think of a way to paraphrase it? I don't know a lot about wine-making equipment myself.
Nikki Scott-Despaigne Mar 11, 2013:
I can find no trace of an English term for it either (which does not mean that one does not exist, of course). However, from my searches, it would appear that many French do not know the term either and are surprised to discover the term.

double spigot

sounds reasonably technical... I had to translate this last year and I left it in the French with an explanation in brackets.
Peer comment(s):

agree Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Nice way round it. Love the French though and keeping the French in this sort of context will give rise to conversations for those who speak a little French. (I still snigger when I see "fresh goat on toast" for "chèvre chaud" ; better than "hot goat"!)

yes, a "chèvre à deux becs" does sound rather bacchanalian

neutral Nikki Scott-Despaigne : Descriptive, but difficult to get yer teeth round it after a glass or two!
