They can be used with no modifications done to the generator

As I understand this term, it is essentially an alternative fuel that does not require changes to the power generation unit that burns the fuel.

This term seems to come from the idea of a "drop in" place/shelter/medical service centre etc, where you can visit (or "drop in") without having made a previous arrangement, and often without being officially registered as a member/patient/user etc. Therefore the idea connotes spontaneity and ad hoc arrangements.
