Russian term

знаменитое – боль и пустота

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
Однако за исключением этих, пусть и важных, нюансов, президентское послание напоминало знаменитое – боль и пустота.

There must be some kind of literary reference here --- what "famous message" is full of (or contains the words) pain and emptiness? I can only think of Tatyana's famous letter to Onegin or the suicide notes of Mayakovsky and Yesenin, which are full of angst, but do not actually contain those words. Any suggestions?

Found several references to this poem But can't find who wrote it!

the famous pain and emptiness

If it's a Russian cliche, whatever the source and current usage, I think you should use the English cliche "pain and emptiness".

Also, you could write "the proverbial" instead of "famous".

pain and void

Поскольку речь о президентском послании, скорее всего, аллюзия на гимн "Боль и пустота" оппозиционной партии нового типа "Экзистенциальная Россия" (они возглавляли "Марш миллионов" в Москве).

the famous -- Angst and Emptiness

I would use Angst, although it means anguish, but this term is more often used in relation to this literary concept.

Peer comment(s):

neutral The Misha : 3 things wrong with this: 1) No dash needed; 2) No capitalization needed; 3) Angst is not strictly speaking pain, and it has a certain connotation that is absent from the original. No need to drag that into the frame, that's the author's prerogative.
