These two words are frequently confused (as you can see from this unfortunate parking sign) simply because of the close similarity in their spelling, though their meanings are actually completely different!
So remember: remainder means something that is left over.
For example: After we had eaten, I put the remainder of the stew back in the fridge.
Reminder means something used to jog the memory or help you not to forget.
For example: I put a post-it note on the fridge as a reminder of my appointment.
