The coating composition of the present invention preferably comprises A) 30-95% by weight solids of a hydroxy and carboxy functional acrylic copolymer and B) 5-70% by weight solids of a curing agent with free isocyanate groups. The (meth)acrylate copolymers A) are prepared by a skew feed polymerization process with at least two feed streams. ***Skew feed polymerization*** as used herein means a multi-step reaction wherein products of previous reaction steps are combined with additional reactants in a sequential fashion to yield the desired copolymer. The preferred embodiment of this invention is a two-step skew feed polymerization wherein a first group of monomers are reacted to form an intermediate polymer and a second group of monomers are reacted in the presence of the intermediate polymer to form the copolymer used in this invention.
